Event Safety: How To Stay Safe In A Large Crowd

There may be safety in numbers, but attending busy sporting events, concerts, and other large gatherings is not without risks. Here’s how we recommend to best protect yourself, your family, and your money when in a packed crowd:

  1. Research the event:
Study and get to know the area where the event is taking place. How many people are attending or expected to attend? How long will the event last? When should you plan to arrive and leave? Once you arrive at an event, it’s important to note where the emergency exits are, and where the nearest first aid tent and an emergency vehicle is located. This info provides you with a better plan to manage an emergency in a large crowd.
  2. Dress appropriately:
Most people would first think to check the weather forecast to ensure they are prepared for rainfall but it’s far easier than you might think to sustain injury from a trip or fall because of your clothing choices. Avoid wearing loose clothing or accessories that could become tangled or pulled as well as practical shoes such as closed-toe shoes. Keep the laces tied to avoid tripping.
  3. Navigate the crowds safely:
Keep a diligent eye on your children, it helps to dress your group in similar clothing. Pick a rendezvous point to meet up if you or one of your group become separated in the crowd. In the event of a crowd rush (stampede), try not to resist the force of the crowd, keep your hands in front of your face and feet firmly planted on the ground in a boxer-like stance. If you do fall, curl into a ball to avoid injury, stay calm, and stand back up as soon as possible.
  4. Keep your valuable safe:
Theft or losing your belongings is a big concern at events with large crowds. Some people may use a crowd crammed together in a small space in an opportunistic way. This is why you shouldn’t carry much and if possible, restrict your belongings to an I.D., cash, one debit or credit card, and your fully-charged mobile phone. Choose a bag with a zipper, button, or clasp closures, and a strap that hangs across your body.

If you plan to attend a large event alone, be sure to let someone know you’re going and keep them posted on your whereabouts throughout. Think carefully about any and all situations that could potentially arise and have action plans in place. Doing so will go a long way to helping you feel and be safe.

If you’re at an event in Ireland or the UK, look out for the Medicore tent. Our doctors, registered paramedics, Emergency Nurses, Emergency Medical Technicians or first responders can ensure the event or festival your attending is afforded the best event medical cover available.
